L'Avventura
This weekend I finally took the time to watch L’Avventura (1960), considered to be one of the best films ever made, and a truly groundbreaking cinematic experience at the time of its release.
I absolutely loved this movie. From a photographer’s perspective, it was a total delight. You can pause at any point in the movie and it’s almost guaranteed that the frame you stop on could stand on its own as a well made photograph.
(Side note, I remember having an epiphany with a friend and photo mentor Caleb about a decade ago while watching some Sofia Coppola movie; I said her movies all look like photographs I want to take. Caleb said, “Well yeah dude, cinematography is photography, just at 24 frames a second.” Up until that point I hadn’t really looked at it like that, and the simplicity of that concept blew me away.)
I think a lot about cinematography and while I can’t say for sure if I take any influence from filmmakers, at least consciously, I love taking taking screenshots of movies after I’m done watching for reference and mood boards. Here are some of my favorites.
